What makes her interesting?
Carmen has her hands in lots of honey pots. She's a great listener who is genuinely interested in other people. This sets her up for success in her latest project: researching the maker's economy in Edmonton and consulting how to foster growth. After studying environment, culture, and society for her Master's in Edinburgh, she came back to Edmonton with a bit of reverse culture shock and a lot of ideas for how to make our city a greater place to live. She puts her money where her mouth is: she brought the LIVINGbridge to life last year, and is involved with Infill Development Edmonton Association (IDEA).
Besides teaching industrial design at University of Alberta, she knows a thing or two about the craft having formed Loyal Loot Collective ten years ago. You can find Carmen bringing makers of all kinds together at events around the city, or supporting her friends at art and design showcases.
Carmen's Favourite Places
eat & drink// Leva - 11053 86 Ave (where we met)
Leva is Carmen's favourite space to enjoy in the summer. There is a beautiful patio set in a cozy neighbourhood, and the food and drinks are excellent.
eat// Izakaya Tomo - 3739 99 Street
I'm not really into sushi, but Carmen assures me there is something for everyone at this Japanese eatery. The name is equivalent to a pub in Japan, and the food and casual comfort of the space matches. She can't say enough good things about the place.
shop// Stylus - 10538 102 Avenue
A fellow stationery lover, Carmen is always stopping in to see what new beautifully curated product they have in store.
go// Beaver Hills House Park - Jasper Avenue & 105 Street
Carmen thinks this park in the heart of downtown is under-utilized. Consider bringing your lunch or playing cards over when you need some park time.
go// Louise McKinney Riverfront Park - 9999 Grierson Hill Road
She was almost hesitant to share the little known rocks by the river. She doesn't want it to get too crowded, but I reminded her that only my parents read The Noteworthy. She's often sitting with her friends on the rocks for the view and nature break and I look forward to checking them out myself.
Carmen's Favourite Things
shop// Loyal Loot
How could she not mention these? Loyal Loot is like her only child to date. She started designing the collection with friends in 2004 which has since grown to see their product in specialty stores all over the world.
near & dear// Her Grandmother's Ring
Every day, Carmen wears a ring that once belonged to her Grandmother. She never met her, but the ring has been passed down through aunts and others and Carmen feels connected to her by wearing it. You can see it in the photo of her holding her note below!
read// The Death and Life of Great American Cities by Jane Jacobs
It's an excellent book for progressive urbanists. Carmen would know - she's the expert!
read// Steve Martin's fiction
Carmen doesn't read a lot of fiction, but she adores the simple, entertaining reads that Steve Martin released.
Carmen's Words of Wisdom
Once something excites you, don't let it go. Don't allow great ideas to fall by the wayside. Find and keep the momentum, and work with people you collaborate well with.
