Kendall leads by example. She works hard, she's incredibly smart and creative, and she's always so kind. Kendall loves to build things. Namely, cool companies. Right now, she's revolutionizing the shoe industry through her made-to-measure shoe company (started with her sister) called Poppy Barley. Kendall turned her weekly emails sharing things to do on Edmonton weekends into City and Dale, a lifestyle blog you may already be familiar with. She's a marathon runner (a really quick one!) and recently launched Run Collective with her fellow Lululemon run ambassadors. She's also on a team of food & wine lovers developing a new wine & beer adventure next year (stay tuned).
When she's not building awesome companies and running river valley trails, she's sharing her knowledge with young women and entrepreneurs at conferences and speaking events.
I'd be happy being half the wonderful lady Kendall is. I'm ever so grateful that she got me into this whole writing thing back in 2011 by letting me write for City and Dale. She taught me all about blogging, developed lots of creative ideas over meals with me (including the concept of The Noteworthy), and continually inspires me to work hard and reap the benefits. Plus, she always laughs at my jokes so that's nice too.
Kendall's Favourite Places
Let it be known that it was hard for Kendall to narrow down her favourites in Edmonton. She really does have a love affair with our city, but in true Kendall fashion, she came prepared to our lunch meeting with detailed notes:
Kendall is a cookie snob. She's very particular about the cookies she makes and buys. Her local favourites are Cookie Love (12325a-102 Avenue) and Bloom Cookie Co. (available at Remedy or City Market).
eat// Sabor Divino - 10220-103 Street
Kendall craves the lamb and goat cheese salad from Sabor Divino on a regular basis.
eat// The Marc - 9940-106 Street
A favourite restaurant to visit with her husband, Ross, The Marc has consistently excellent staff, atmosphere and food. She usually persuades Ross to order fries so she can pick off his plate.
drink// Cozy wine bars on a chilly winter night
Kendall's favourite thing to do in the winter is huddle in a tiny wine bar with her husband or close friends. You know, the places so small that you know everyone around you by the end of the night. Her recommendations: Tzin (10115-104 Street), Bibo (9918-89 Avenue), and The Wine Room (10525 Jasper Avenue).
go// Running Path along the river from Groat Road to the LRT Bridge
Okay, not an easy place to explain, but Kendall loves running on this dirt trail through the river valley and into downtown. It's her favourite place to run, and she knows a lot about running in this city.
covet// Her wedding ring from Concept Jewelry Design - #120-20 Perron Street, St. Albert
Kendall and Ross designed their wedding rings together. It's kind of funny because she used to think she wouldn't wear a wedding ring, and now it's her most coveted belonging that brings her strength. Beyond being a symbol of her marriage, she loved designing something to last forever. Not just what's trendy now, but something that will equally stand the test of time and represent her and Ross.
Kendall's Recommended Read
read// Start With Why by Simon Sinek
For entrepreneurs like Kendall, this book explains why understanding the purpose and legacy of your business should be top priority before you worry about anything else. It's exactly why Poppy Barley is doing so well; they're making a positive, fundamental change to the way we manufacture consumer goods.
Kendall's down to earth, too!
I said to Kendall, "Tell me something I can share that will make you seem less super-human," and she just looked confused. She's looked up to by lots of people, but sees herself as being just like everyone else. She thinks that having a really low-key beauty routine makes her relatable (she's never coloured her hair and rarely uses a blowdryer) - but I think that falls under the super-human column. I will accept this quirky fact though: she loves collecting cook books from the places she travels and enjoys reading them in bed.
