Danny is magnetic. Everyone who meets him wants to be his friend. I met him years ago when he worked for 29 Armstrong (sadly closing now, R.I.P.) and decided to make him my friend. After countless amounts of people mentioned that Danny should be on The Noteworthy, here he is.
It's hard to describe what makes Danny interesting. He's smart as a whip and an excellent conversationist. He's very involved in the Edmonton design community. Equipped with a degree in mathematics, Danny went back to school for interior design (as most mathematicians do, right?). He made connections all over the world as the previous buyer for 29 Armstrong, which has led to design projects with overseas partners. Now he splits his time between interior and industrial design consulting, social media masterminding, math tutoring, retail strategizing, mentoring designers, and scheming his next vacation. Even though he has the occasional negative thing to say about Edmonton (gasp! Is that allowed?) he is making it a better place, whether he likes it or not. He spreads the word about all the latest hot spots and supports up-and-coming designers that make great products right here in Edmonton. His main client is IZM, a design company making waves around the world with contemporary, heirloom quality furniture built right here in Edmonton.
He believes in a work/life unbalance (heavy on the life side). His favourite thing is unexpected travel. I'm talking about booking a trip to China 3 days in advance. Or South America for weeks at a time if he catches a good flight deal that week. Every time you see him, he has a new fascinating project on the go, and a far away place lined up to be working from or relaxing at. It's incredible to see where following one's passion can take them. Danny, stop being so much cooler than everyone, okay?
Danny's Favourite Places
eat// Corso 32 - 10345 Jasper Avenue
Part of living life to the fullest includes eating the best food possible at all times. Favourite dish: cavatelli/short rib.
eat// The Marc - 9940-106 Street
Even though it's out of his usual 2 block radius, Danny loves the food here. So does Kendall Barber!
go// 4th Street Promenade - 104 Street from Jasper Ave to 104 Ave.
His daily routine includes getting coffee from Credo or Transcend, a treat from Dauphine, produce from Earth's General Store for a juice at lunch and popping in stores to chat with business owners.
go// Alberta Legislature - 10800-97 Avenue
He takes the free guided tour at least once per year and holds countless summer picnics on the grounds. It's also Andrew Ference's favourite place to exercise.
go// Colofts - 3rd floor, 106 Street and 102 Avenue (previously ArtsHab One)
Danny works out of his studio in Colofts, and will soon be living right across the hallway. He loves the sense of community with neighbouring creatives (and dreams up new schemes over morning coffee with talented photographer Aaron Pedersen).
go// Edmonton Symphony Orchestra Late Night Concerts - Winspear Centre
The late night concerts are aimed towards a youthful audience with familiar songs and a laid-back atmosphere. Hint: The next one in June is going to be great.
Danny's Favourite Thing
covet// Rosendahl Watch
Forgetting his watch at home is a rare occurrence that reminds Danny how dependent he is on it. With that, a new Noteworthy pattern emerges: Adam Rozenhart favours his watch, too!
Danny's Recommended Reads
No surprise, they are mostly design related. He took a look through his growing collection and provided this summary: "most books I've purchased in recent days are for product design schemes, me nerding out over design or brushing up on math concepts for tutoring."
read// The Essence of Japanese Design by Piotti, Mennegazzo and Hara.
read// The Package Design Book 2 by Pentawards

Of course, Danny has a signed copy.
Danny's Words of Wisdom
Work less. Travel More. Travel is important, so do it now. A lot of people travel to get out of their comfort zone, but Danny feels most in his comfort zone when he travels. He's way more inclined to strike up a conversation with a stranger while traveling. He loves to surround himself with people who share the same relentless passion for travel.
