Josh is cool, calm and collected. We met at the Latin food market (Paraiso Tropical) close to his house and sat outside with a hot snack and Mexican cola to drink. It felt like we escaped Edmonton for a little while!
Josh loves building community. He is serving his second year as board chair of Media Architecture Design Edmonton (M.A.D.E.), an organization supporting our creative community (and putting on cool events). He loves helping people bring their ideas to life through MADE and seeing how the public responds. With a Masters in Landscape Architecture in his back pocket, he recently launched his own branding and environmental design company called Land Faculty.
Aside from that, to say Josh is a cycling enthusiast is an understatement. He started his own cycling club called Nuovo Nord. It's a casual, not-too-competitve club that states "we ride to justify eating and drinking good local beer" on its website. It's another way for Josh to bring people together for a little fun.
Josh's Favourite Places
eat & drink// District Coffee Co. - #101, 10011-109 Street
Before a Saturday morning ride, Josh meets with the bike club at District for a coffee, rice pudding and some salted caramels for the ride.
drink// Three Boars - 8424-109 Street
During a mid-week ride, Josh likes to stop at Three Boars for a beer on their cozy patio.
eat// Bistro Praha - 10117-101 Street
Josh suggests these two must-haves: Steak Tartare and the Prague Egg with Caviar.
eat & shop// Paraiso Tropical - 9136-118 Avenue
This Latin food market is close to home for Josh and he's often stopping in for a last minute meal or hot snack and soda. Josh thinks the Mexican sodas taste better since they're sweetened with cane sugar.
shop// Lee Valley - 18403-104 Avenue
I love that Josh mentioned this! It's the perfect store for all kinds of home projects and gifts. Those who know about Lee Valley love it, and everyone else just needs to go check it out.
shop/ Pedalhead Road Works - 9635-82 Avenue
Josh believes they're the best bike shop in the country. Rather than carrying everything by every brand, they curate the best of each. They're not afraid to introduce something new, and they carry great casual clothing too!
Josh's Favourite Things
covet// bikes (obviously!)
He has 4 bikes now (I actually thought he'd have more) and has a sentimental relationship with each one. His favourite was built by his friend, and he's travelled with it many times - about 10-15 cities and even toured across Europe with it.
Josh's Recommended Reads
read// The Rules by The Velominati Keepers of the Cog
It's a book about cycling with a mix of history, advice and humour. It's a reminder to take it less seriously while remaining passionate (bike clubs can be quite cliquey).
read// Fictional Works of William Gibson
Well known for being a Canadian sci-fi author, his latest books have a new angle taking place in subcultures of the present. Latest three books: Pattern Recognition, Spook Country, Zero History. Watch for his new one out in October called The Peripheral.
After some thinking, Josh simply said, "remember to eat." No, not just "don't go hungry." Besides the obvious nourishment (especially for long bike rides), remember to take time to share meals with friends and loved ones. Josh loves that all cultures share the act of eating as a way to build and maintain relationships. So remember to enjoy meals with great company.
Following the eating theme, Josh shared a recipe that he knows by memory after making these so often. Perfect for a little snack or to take along with you on a bike ride!
