There's no shortage of charisma when it comes to Wade. We sat on Zenari's indoor patio and determined we have similar perspectives on things like science being awesome for everyone, and the fact that good taste cannot be bought. We both like to celebrate well-roundedness in people, instead of just being an expert in one thing. Come to think of it, we're probably meant to be best friends.
With a background in education, he helps University of Alberta professors better themselves at being educators (not just experts in the field they're teaching). Besides that, he's really entertaining as co-boss of Nerd Nite (with Adam Rozenhart), and hosts Edmonton Story Slam. He told me about all the cold hard cash that passes through his hands as a volunteer for celebrities at Edmonton Expo (it's nuts). During the summer, he volunteers his time with Camp fYrefly and the University's Institute for Sexual Minorities Studies and Services (ISMSS).
Wade's Favourite Places
eat// Zenari's - 10180-101 St (in Manulife Place)
It's one of his favourite family-owned haunts because they get to know you there, and treat you like family. The "patio" is the perfect temperature year-round (it's inside Manulife Place). Wade highly recommends the antipasto plate.
drink// Iconoclast Coffee - 11807-105 Ave
You can ride your bike right inside the big garage doors that are open during summer. This coffee shop roasts their own beans and supplies a lot of your favourite local restaurants with coffee too.
go// Constable Ezio Faraone Park - 97 Ave & 110 St
Wade loves how quick he can get to this park on his bike. Spectacular views of the river valley and stair runners (sorry, Wade, I can't remember if you said not to include that part).
experience// Edmonton Symphony Orchestra at Winspear Centre
The ESO can play every style of music exceptionally well. We don't know how lucky we have it in Edmonton with the ESO and the Winspear Centre as a regular place to see them.
Wade's Favourite Things
covet// Chef's Knife from Knifewear - 10816 Whyte Avenue
Wade picks up his chef's knife and feels amazing. It was a 30th birthday gift that he can't cook without. He even takes his knife camping.
read// A Short History of Nearly Everything - Wade loves this book because "it teaches him sciencey things."
Wade's Words of Wisdom
We worry too much. Think: will this matter in two weeks? No. Also, it's okay to feel successful and be frivolous on occasion, but it's better to busy yourself with people and conversations than worry about what to buy next.
Here is the note that Wade wrote. I had to include a video showing how he made that circle. It blew my mind! Try it. Wade makes it look so easy.
